Illustration of a rider, motorcycle, and coverage checklist

A motorcycle policy should fit the bike you ride and the risks you want covered. The cheapest quote and the best fit are not always the same. Before choosing a policy, use this checklist to compare what each quote actually includes.

Start with the coverage, not the monthly payment

Liability coverage addresses injury or property damage you may cause to others, up to your policy limits. Ask what limits the quote includes and whether a higher limit changes the price enough to matter to you.

Collision coverage can help repair or replace your motorcycle after a covered crash. Comprehensive coverage generally addresses covered non-collision losses such as theft, fire, or weather damage. Both commonly involve deductibles. Compare the deductible and the coverage, not just the premium.

Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may help when an at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance. Availability and details vary by state and policy, so ask how it would work for you.

Ask about your actual bike and riding habits

  • Are accessories, custom parts, luggage, or riding gear covered? If so, what limits apply?
  • Does the quote include roadside assistance or towing, and are there distance or service limits?
  • Do you carry a passenger? Ask how your policy addresses passenger-related claims.
  • Is the bike financed? Check any coverage requirements in your financing agreement.
  • Are there discounts for a safety course, multiple vehicles, or bundling? Ask which ones you actually qualify for.

Compare quotes side by side

For a fair comparison, request the same liability limits, optional coverages, and deductibles from each insurer. Then review exclusions and claims details before you buy. Coverage names can look alike while the policy terms differ.

Motorcycle insurance rules and available options differ by state, and your policy controls what is covered. If you are unsure about a requirement, confirm it with your state insurance department or ask us to walk through your quote.
